My father was born a KELLOGG in Michigan in 1921.
Most of the information contained here is from the family history book titled:
The  Kelloggs in the Old World and The New
copyright 1903 by Timothy Hopkins

It is a very odd thing to grow up with such a famous last name.  Although the author of my source of much of the information contained here says that the Kellogg's did not have a family coat of arms, the name on the cereal boxes (as shown above in the Kellogg Company copyrighted trademark label) has become as familiar as any country's flag.  The author gives a few versions of the origin of the name.  One is that is Scot's for Kill Loch, which means the "family of the Lake Cemetery".  The other is English, which is for locksmith.  A "Key Log" would indicate a maker of key for "logs" or hobbles or manacles.  Another is Welsh in that a rooster is call a Ceilyog and there was a Flemish family that showed a rooster on it's coat of arms. There are also several different spellings listed in the book.

An online source says that the Kellogg's came from the Clan Kellie of Scotland who served the Earls MacDuff and eventually became known as the Kellock (meaning Clan Kellie) and Kellogg as they moved into Essex, county of England.  It is largely agreed that the vast majority of Kellogg's in America were descended from the three brothers who immigrated to America in the early 1650's.

The above mentioned source book contains several photographs of the church that family weddings took place in (which I was told a few years ago was still standing hundreds of years later) and the home of the Kellogg who came to America.  Please note: I am sorry to say that I do not have access to the Kellogg family book now.  I was able to photo copy relevant pages many years ago to get the info I have referenced.  So, I am not able to help anyone doing research - what you see is all I know.

Nicholas Kellogg (my 11th great grandfather)

born 1488 (Debden, Essex County, England); died 1558

Thomas Kellogg (my 10th great grandfather)

wife or wives unknown

probable child: Phillippe (see next)

Phillippe Kellogg (my 9th great grandfather)

Principle occupation: spinning and weaving

wife or wives unknown

known children: Thomas, Annis, Robert, Mary, Prudence, Martin (see next), Nathaniel, John, Jane, Rachel

Martin (or Martyn) Kellogg (my 8th great grandfather)

Was a weaver

married 1621 Prudence Bird (she, proceeded husband in death, daughter of John Bird)

Joseph Kellogg (my 7th great grandfather)

born 1626 (baptism record in Great Leighs, Essex County, England); died 1708 (Hadley, Massachusetts)

Was a weaver.  Due to a depression in the weaving trade immigrated with his brothers Daniel and Samuel in 1657 to Boston.  In 1661 moved to Hadley, Massachusetts and made agreement to run the Ferry between Hadley and Northampton.  He served as selectman in Hadley for several years.  In 1673 Abigail was acquitted of wearing silk, even though her husband's estate was under the 200 pounds necessary to wear silks (it was considered an extravagance in dress).     Joseph served as a sergeant of the Hadley's Troops which battled the River Tribes in 1676 in the Turner's Falls Fight.

married 1653 Joanna and after her passing in 1666, married Abigail Terry in 1667 (died 1726, daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth Terry )

children by Joanna: Elizabeth, Joseph, Nathaniel, John, Martin, Edward, Samuel, Joanna, Sarah
children by Abigail: Stephen (see next), Nathaniel, Abigail, Elizabeth, Prudence, Ebenezer, Jonathan, Daniel, Joseph, Daniel, Ephraim

Stephen Kellogg (my 6th great grandfather)

born 1668 (in Hadley, Massachusetts); died 1722 (Westfield, Connecticut)

Was a weaver.  In 1697 moved to Westfield, Connecticut.  His tombstone is still standing and here's a photograph of it.  (It actually reads as follows.)

married 1694 Lydia Beldon (born 1675; died 1759; daughter of John and Lydia Beldon.   She married Benjamin Lewis as his second wife after the death of Stephen.)

children: Stephen, Lydia, Moses, Abigail, Daniel, Ephraim, Mercy, Noah, Silas, Amos (see next), Aaron

In 1980, I took a trip to Boston to not only see the city, but to research my roots.  I had been told that this tombstone still stood in Hadley, Mass., but when I got there, found out that no-one knew exactly where it stood in the cemetery.  So I searched for over two hours, until I was ready to give up.  Decided to take one last look in a hill that was overgrown with weeds.   Well, as you have suspected, I finally found the tombstone there.  It was hidden in weeds and covered with bird droppings, but finding it made me cry, as it was truly a link to my past.  (And I am always amused at the way it was carved - a real "plan ahead" guy did it!  Yes, this is exactly how it reads.)
